Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 15x10 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
- Gradually pour in boiling water while mixing on low speed. The batter will be thin.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.
- While cake is still warm, beat softened butter in a medium bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk, beating until smooth and creamy. Stir in vanilla extract.
- Pour frosting over the warm cake and spread evenly. The warmth will help melt the frosting, creating a smooth finish.
- Let cake cool completely before cutting and serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder. You can also add chocolate chips to the batter. Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
