- Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water (about 1 inch above potatoes), and bring to a boil over high heat.
- Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until potatoes are easily pierced with a fork.
- Drain potatoes thoroughly in a colander and let sit for a few minutes to steam off excess moisture.
- Return potatoes to the pot. Add milk, butter, salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder.
- Mash potatoes until smooth and creamy using a potato masher or electric mixer (start on low speed).
- Stir in sour cream (if using). Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
- Serve immediately or keep warm.
Notes
For extra creamy potatoes, use whole milk and let the potatoes steam for a few minutes after draining. You can also add other herbs and spices like chives or rosemary.
