Instructions
  1. Place potatoes in a large pot, cover with cold water (about 1 inch above potatoes), and bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until potatoes are easily pierced with a fork.
  3. Drain potatoes thoroughly in a colander and let sit for a few minutes to steam off excess moisture.
  4. Return potatoes to the pot. Add milk, butter, salt, pepper, and optional garlic powder.
  5. Mash potatoes until smooth and creamy using a potato masher or electric mixer (start on low speed).
  6. Stir in sour cream (if using). Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Notes

For extra creamy potatoes, use whole milk and let the potatoes steam for a few minutes after draining. You can also add other herbs and spices like chives or rosemary.
